The Dropbox app for PC offers
an intuitive interface that allows users to drag and drop their files into
cloud storage, which will then sync in the background. While it can use its
share of resources during setup, it is one of the most reliable ways to store
and share files remotely on a PC, all while ensuring they are protected against
loss or damage.
PROS
Seamless integration with your
Windows interface: After installation,
Dropbox appears in Explorer as its own folder, while also placing an icon in
the task bar. This allows you quick access to the folder. Drag and drop files
into or out of the Dropbox to update them in the cloud, or see what files someone
has added on their own machine. It's all very intuitive.
Access sharing options from
your desktop: Right-click on any file
or folder, and you'll find sharing options for other users. Even if someone
doesn't have an active Dropbox folder, you can share a file with them -- either
as a direct download link or as an invite to sign up.
CONS
Initial setup and upload can
drag: If you have a large
volume of files or a full folder to upload, initial installation can be slow.
This can impact performance of other applications on your computer, and even
slow down your Internet connection a bit. It's a small complaint because most
people won't have that many files, and syncing will take only an hour or two.
But for large accounts, it can be a frustrating process you'll likely go
through multiple times.
Some options require logging in
to the website: While you can update
files and folders from your desktop app, some options require logging in to the
website, including many sharing and linking tools. The switch is smooth,
however, and the online interface is easy to navigate.
Overall, Dropbox is one of the
most accessible and easy-to-use cloud storage tools available for the PC
platform. It's free to download and use up to 2GB, and it offers a range of
options for both personal and business users, making it a must for many users.
PUBLISHER'S DESCRIPTION
From Dropbox:
Dropbox works just like any other folder on your computer, but
with a few differences. Any files or folders inside Dropbox will get
synchronized to Dropbox's servers and any other computer linked to your
account. Green checkmarks will appear on top of your files to let you know that
they're synced and up to date. All data is transferred over SSL and encrypted
with AES-256 before storage. Dropbox keeps track of every change made to any of
its contents.
